PITCHBLACK PREMIERE: MARK FISHER & JUSTIN BARTON 'ON VANISHING LAND'

We team up with Hyperdub’s new sub-label Flatlines to premiere the label’s first release: Mark Fisher & Justin Barton - 'On Vanishing Land'. Something very different to what we usually showcase, this audio-essay-meets-ambient-soundscape will take you on a heady trip.

Hyperdub launch new sub-label, Flatlines, for the vinyl and digital release of On Vanishing Land, an audio-essay by Justin Barton and the late Mark Fisher. OVL evokes a walk along the Suffolk coastline in 2006, from Felixstowe container port ("a nerve ganglion of capitalism") to the Anglo-Saxon burial ground at Sutton Hoo. A walk under immense skies, through zones of deep time and within sunlit, liminal terrains, into the eerie.

Everywhere there are charged atmospheres, shadowy incursions, enigmatic departures. A derelict radar base, coastal heathland, drifting thistledown, towers of overgrown shipping containers - music haunted by wider levels of reality, narrations about rarely visited zones and potentials, voices of dreams and stories. Newly composed tracks by John Foxx, Gazelle Twin, Baron Mordant, Raime, Pete Wiseman, Farmers of Vega, Skjolbrot, Eerie Anglia, Ekoplekz and Dolly Dolly; and, alongside these, views toward M.R. James’s Oh Whistle and I’ll Come to You My Lad (1904), Joan Lindsay’s Picnic at Hanging Rock (1967), and Brian Eno’s On Land (1982). Beyond the surface of the day something becomes visible, a way forward, an escape-path from capitalist reality. On Vanishing Land is about following the lines of terrains and dreams. It is about a micropolitics of escape, of disappearance. A micropolitics of waking the faculties.

“It is April, but it feels like summer. They turn left onto the seafront […]”

On Vanishing Land was initially part of an exhibition commissioned by The Otolith Collective and The Showroom in London, and after londonunderlondon (2005) it was the second audio-work collaboration by Justin Barton and Mark Fisher. The LP cover features photos taken by Mark Fisher and a short essay by Justin Barton.

released July 26, 2019

PITCHBLACK PREMIERE: AMON TOBIN 'FEAR IN A HANDFUL OF DUST'

7PM SOLD OUT - 8:15PM ON SALE - SCROLL DOWN

On April 26, electronic music pioneer Amon Tobin will release ‘Fear in a Handful of Dust’ - his first album in eight years since his triumphant ‘ISAM’. Amon Tobin’s role in electronic music innovation cannot be understated. In a career spanning over 20 years, the Brazilian-born UK-raised producer has released of some of the most important, era-defining records of his time, setting a pace of sonic exploration and musical adventurism that has helped to shape much of what has come since.

His last album ISAM utilised advanced synthesis processing and production techniques traditionally reserved for sound design in film, and paved the way for a radically new kind of audiovisual performance. Pioneering the use of projection mapping in a live performance context, the landmark ISAM shows were hailed by major media outlets including Wired, Rolling Stone, NPR, and were premiered at some of the world’s most prestigious venues, from the Sydney Opera House to the Olympia in Paris to the London Hammersmith, and many international festivals including Sonar, MUTEK and Moogfest.

The depth and scope of Amon Tobin's work is a major inspiration to many. From the Kronos Quartet to Diplo, he has achieved respect among artists within and outside electronic music. He established a reputation for musical ingenuity unconfined by genre, and over two decades remains one of the most visionary electronic artists of his generation.

PITCHBLACK PREMIERE: BIG THIEF 'U.F.O.F.'

U.F.O.F., — F standing for ‘Friend’ — is the name of the highly anticipated third record by Big Thief and their first on 4AD, set to be released on 3rd May 2019.

U.F.O.F. was recorded in rural western Washington at Bear Creek Studios.  In a large cabin-like room, the band set up their gear to track live with engineer Dom Monks and producer Andrew Sarlo, who was also behind their previous albums.  Having already lived these songs on tour, they were relaxed and ready to experiment.  The raw material came quickly.  Some songs were written only hours before recording and stretched out instantly, first take, vocals and all.

Making friends with the unknown… All my songs are about this,” says Adrianne Lenker (guitar, vocals); “If the nature of life is change and impermanence, I’d rather be uncomfortably awake in that truth than lost in denial.”

4AD are excited to invite fans to the UK premiere of U.F.O.F.  in association with Pitchblack Playback. For your chance to attend, you either can pre-order the album here or sign up here  At 11AM on Monday 15th April a ticket link will be sent to all customers to claim on a first come first served basis.  These will be of a limited number. The premiere will be held in the dark at The Castle Cinema in Homerton, East London, with the venue's immersive sound system paired with comfy armchairs and optional blindfolds provided for extra darkness.  Please note that phones will be placed in a Yondr pouch on arrival.

LATECOMERS WILL NOT BE ADMITTED.

Our wish and intention are to offer the astounding presence, detail and colour of this recording on great PA systems in a public situation as an introduction. Floating Points’ personal collection of global soul, ambient, jazz and folk treasures form the latest in the warmly revered Late Night Tales series.

Sam Shepherd aka Floating Points’ music taste is notoriously tricky to define, ranging from ethereal classical at one end to coruscating techno at the other, united only in a firm belief in the transcendental power of music to move hearts, minds and – yes – feet. Similarly, his production career has ranged from early experiments in dance music with breakout records such as the ‘Shadows EP’ and collaborating with legendary Gnawa master Mahmoud Guinia to his expansive album ‘Elaenia’, which met with critical acclaim upon its release in 2015.

This Late Night Tales excursion into the depths of the evening reflects his broad tastes. The globally-travelled producer has collected untold treasures on his travels from dusty stores in Brazil to market stalls near his hometown. There’s the gorgeous ‘Via Làctea’, culled from Carlos Walker’s debut album, Abu Talib’s (Bobby Wright) plaintive ‘Blood Of An American’ and Robert Vanderbilt’s gospel reworking of Manchild’s ‘Especially For You’. Raw soul and feeling oozing from each song’s pores.

At the other end of the music scale are the modernists, such as Québécoise Kara-Lis Coverdale who weighs in with the indelible ‘Moments In Love’, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith whose ‘Milk’ is an exercise in tranquility, while Sarah Davachi’s meditative mix-opener offers respite from a weary world.

We have some tracks exclusive to Late Night Tales; alongside Davachi’s offerings there is also Toshimaru Nakamura’s ‘Nimb #59’, as well as the now traditional cover version. Shepherd delved into his childhood memory for this one, a track taken from the first album his parents bought him, Kenny Wheeler’s ‘Music For Large & Small Ensembles’: Sam offers up his interpretation of ‘Opening Part 1’. Wheeler also contributes horns to Azimuth track The Tunnel, written and performed by Norma Winstone and John Taylor who, coincidentally, are the parents of Floating Points’ drummer Leo Taylor. Closing the album, Lauren Laverne reads the suitably nocturnal poem ‘Ah! Why, Because The Dazzling Sun’ by Emily Brontë.

"I’ve learnt about a lot of incredible music from listening to the Late Night Tales compilations overthe years, so I jumped at the opportunity to compile one myself. The music is a selection of the kind of records I play to set the tone when DJing all night long."

- Sam Shepherd (Floating Points), 2019
